About the Palace house

Historic building from 1751 - a place for artists and royals.

The Palace House, formerly called the Sugar Mill and Fürstenberg palace, a palace-like building in Brunnsparken in Gothenburg. It was designed by architect Carl Hårleman, building began in November 1749 and was inaugurated on May 14 1751. In March 1792 large parts of the building were destroyed in one of the major Gothenburg fires.

Later the property was acquired by the war college who used parts of the premises for sugar manufacture until 1841 when the Magnus Family bought the house and rebuilt it to a four family villa of 6000 m². When the family's daughter Göthilda Magnus inherited the house after her parents' death in 1879 her husband to be Pontus Fürstenberg moved into the palace and it was now rebuilt into a one family villa.

Anders Zorn
Many famous artists have stayed here
The couple had a number of young artists living in the house and as compensation for food and shelter, they decorate the house. Some of these artists was Carl Larsson, Anders Zorn, Bruno Liljefors, Ernst Josephson, Hugo Birger, Herman Norman and sculptor Per Hasselberg. After a while the house was too small for all the art and an additional floor was built which was completed in 1884 and which came to be called the Fürstenberg gallery.

The first electric ceiling lamp in Gothenburg was in this house and the first nationwide phone was dialed from the property during the spouses Fürstenberg time. Fürstenbergs will gave the property and its art collection to the Gothenburg municipality, and today you will find this collection at the Gothenburg Art Museum.

The Palace house becomes a hotel
The palace was rebuilt into a hotel, which opened in 1906 under the name Palace Hotel. For a long time, this was the leading hotel in Gothenburg and both government officials and royals have stayed here during their visit to the city. In 1968 the hotel operations ceased and the intention was that the house would be demolished within a decade. In 1969 the Stockholm Enskilda Bank moved in and in 1971 the Wermland Bank took over. The demolition threat was now lifted. When the Wermland Bank, 20 years later merged with Göta Bank, the office was closed and the house is still here today, and since 1993 houses both Hotels Robinson and the Palace Restaurant.
